Purpose
Jack Ashton founded the Young Artist Chamber Players in 1985 with the goal of giving excellent string players along the Wasatch Front the opportunity to participate in a quality chamber orchestra. Since then, three additional orchestras have been added to the "family" of YACP: these other groups serve to prepare younger string players to be competent and to enjoy fine chamber playing. Given these goals to promote the young people and to help them have an outstanding musical experience, the following policies have been adopted by the YACP board.
Qualifying
Membership is by invitation only, based on auditions. We require that all students who participate also take private music lessons, encouraging them to be serious about developing their musical talents.
Audition Information
Auditions will be conducted on a first come, first served basis. There will be an order list for musicians to sign when they arrive. Placement letters and rehearsal schedules will be sent prior to our first rehearsal. Rehearsals are held each Monday afternoon from September through November, and from January through April.
These auditions are for new members of the orchestras, and for those who wish to move up to a new orchestra. Musicians wishing to remain in the same orchestra they were in last year need not audition, but should attend the first rehearsal.
Those students auditioning should be prepared to sight read, play a three-octave scale, and play 2 minutes of your best piece. Download a copy of the audition requirements here (Word document).
Violinists auditioning for Youth Chamber Orchestra should be playing at the level of the Vivaldi Concertos in Book IV to Book V in the Suzuki Method, violists and cellists at the level of Book IV.
Violinists auditioning for the Youth String Ensemble should be playing at the level of Book VI in the Suzuki Method, violists and cellists in Book V.
Tuition
$120 is the fee for both orchestras. This is payable at the first rehearsal, and due no later than October 11. A $10 late fee is assessed after October 11. Students who have siblings in any of the YACP orchestras can obtain a small discount on their tuition. For families with 2 students in the orchestras, a $10 discount is given off one student's tuition. For three or more, tuition is discounted $10 each.
Attendance
Rehearsals every Monday afternoon and performances are mandatory. YCO and YSE meet from 5:30 until 7:00. Whenever a student misses more than three rehearsals or is tardy more than three times during a semester, his or her membership will be reviewed.
Uniforms
The board has selected the following standards for both orchestras:
For the girls, we expect a LONG black skirt, which should come within 6 inches of the floor while shoes are being worn. No pants are allowed. Black tights and black dress shoes are required. A white top or blouse of your choice is also required.
For the boys, we require black slacks or black khaki pants, such as no-iron Dockers or those sold at Gap. No cargo pants or jeans are allowed. Black socks and black dress shoes are required--no sneakers. A white shirt and a tie of your choice are also required.
Please do not chew gum during rehearsals or performances.
